HR Meeting Invitation Snohomish County Human Resource Association Presents
Ms. Kellis Borek FMLA and Washington Family Leave
May 15, 2008, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm
Holiday Inn, 3105 Pine Street, Everett, WA
Members/Students $30; Non-Members $40
HR professionals are frequently asked to coordinate different leave laws that
can greatly affect employees and their firms. Many times leave laws overlap,
causing confusion in trying to administer them. Ms. Borek will discuss changes
to the Federal Leave Law (FMLA) including the 2008 amendments regarding leave
for military family members. She will also discuss Washington’s Leave Laws
including the recent amendment providing for paid family leave and the Family
Care Act. Finally, she will discuss how the federal and state laws overlap and
what we as HR professionals need to do to address these types of leave in our
organizations.
About the Presenter:
Ms. Kellis Borek, a staff attorney with Washington Employers, Inc., is an
experienced employment attorney who advises and represents employers in all
aspects of employment law. She was formerly in private practice in Seattle, with
a focus on business and employment law, and has successfully represented
employers before state and federal regulatory agencies and courts. She has also
served as an arbitrator in King County, arbitrating personal injury and
insurance disputes. Ms. Borek has an undergraduate degree from Washington State
University and a law degree from Seattle University. She is licensed to practice
in Washington and in the federal courts.

Dear Chamber Members: On behalf of the 3rd Annual Lake Stevens Ironman
70.3, we would like to invite you to participate by donating an item from your
business that would be featured in runner’s goodie bags.
In 2006 the Lake Stevens Ironman 70.3 Triathlon was named part of the
International 70.3 Triathlon series owned by World Triathlon Corporation (WTC).
The Lake Stevens Ironman 70.3 is 1 of 30 Ironman 70.3 events in the world today.
Currently there are participants from over 37 states and 7 foreign countries
represented in this year’s event. In 2007 we had over 1,000 participants in the
Barclay’s North Ironman 70.3 with this year’s event expected to go well over
1,300.
The Lake Stevens Ironman 70.3 is produced by Premier Event Management and is
currently sponsored by Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce, QFC, City of Lake
Stevens, Snohomish County, Powerbar, Gatorade, and
Active.com. This year we are proud to
announce that $5 of every entry fee is going towards the Ronald McDonald House
of Western Washington and Alaska.
All we ask of you is a donation of 1,500 items for the runner’s goodie bags
and Lake Stevens Ironman 70.3 can handle expenses to bring these donated items
to our office.
If you are interested in being included in the runner’s goodie bags, please
contact Ashley Barkley at
ashleypemusa@yahoo.com or 504-454-6561.
Sincerely,
Ashley Barkley

“Showcase Lake Stevens” Big Success - With close to 500 people in
attendance, the Chamber’s third annual “Showcase Lake Stevens” was a big
success. We have had many positive comments from both business and community
participants.
We appreciate all of the businesses that attended as well as our planning
committee chaired by Don Speirs of Perfect Impressions Promotions. Many hours
went into the planning and set up of this event.
We also had some great volunteers from the high school DECA program. These
business and marketing students are very hard workers and they make me feel good
about the future of our business community.
A special thank you to our sponsors Foster Press, North County Bank and
Hometown Values Magazine. Due to their generous contributions the Chamber was
able to offer this great promotional venue to its members at no charge again
this year.
We had some very excited winners that went away with some great prizes and of
course, Ciscoe Morris was a big hit with everyone! We are already looking
forward to next year’s event.
